About our director

 Dynamic, warm, inclusive, enthusiastic, tireless, glowing... these are a few of the words that describe our director of over 30 years, Barbara Braxten. "BB", as she is affectionately called, is well known throughout Region 1 and beyond as an accomplished barber-shopper and a wonderful ambassador for the craft. She has earned the distinction of Master Director, and during her tenure at the helm of LBC, the chorus has brought home ribbons of every color from competition... at least 1 every year.

BB was a singer from her childhood, participating in her church choir at the age of 11 and then given the opportunity to solo a year later. She began voice lessons to develop her talent in her teens and sang a variety of styles, including opera. In her twenties, BB pursued a nightclub career, which was cut short by a wedding and 3 children in quick succession... she was a busy lady, but continued her love of singing, giving occasional concerts.

In 1973, she was invited to an organizational meeting to start the Merrimack Valley Chorus. Even though she thought she had no interest in the barbershop style of music, she attended the meeting and changed her mind when she saw the great learning opportunities that a Sweet Adelines chorus offered. When the director, Carl D'Angio, asked BB to be the Assistant Director, she accepted the job and continued with Merrimack for 4 years. Then, when Liberty Belle Chorus lost their director, BB was asked to take that position, and although it was hard to leave her friends at Merrimack, she accepted. Seems like it's worked out pretty well, 30+ years later...

Music is both a challenge and a deep sense of satisfaction, especially when sharing it with others. A cappella singing has become the highlight of my entire musical life.
