Got Questions?

Here are a number of frequently-asked questions that we get:

How much personal time will it take?

In addition to weekly rehearsals throughout the year, there is an annual show in the fall.  We also
participate in a Sweet Adelines regional competition in April or May each year, and have an annual weekend retreat about a month before to focus on preparing for competition. Smaller groups from the chorus perform in and around our area a varied number of times per year for local festivals, business events, charitable events, as well as participating in a number of Christmas and holiday events.

What is the LBC audition procedure?

If, after your first visit, you would like to pursue membership, on your 2nd visit to us our Associate Director will "voice place" you by finding your range and determining which part would be best for you. You will receive sheet music and a learning CD to help you learn the audition song. The next several rehearsals after that you will be given the opportunity to practice your part while singing privately with a few other members who will be singing all 4 parts, including a member singing your part with you. When you are ready, you will audition by singing your part with 3 others in a quartet. Don't worry -- it's fun!

What are the voice parts in Barbershop?

The voices in our chorus are divided into 4 parts, depending on each individual's vocal range and qualities. The melody is usually sung by the leads and they  typically have a strong mid-range mezzo-soprano range. The tenors sing a harmony part above the leads and they should have a higher lyric soprano range with a light, floating quality. The baritones sing a harmony part that lies in a similar range as the leads. And those with lower voices sing the bass part, which is also a harmony part.

How do I learn the songs?

People learn in all different ways, but most find listening to the learning CD to be very helpful. On the CD there is a track of someone singing your part either alone or predominantly with the other parts, so that's a good way to start. After you feel more confident, you can sing while listening to the other part(s) being sung predominantly and practice holding your own while hearing a different part. In addition, you will be given the sheet music to refer to, although you don't need to know how to read music to be a successful singer in our chorus.
